The Kimberley River Safety Program aims to equip children in remote communities with the skills and knowledge to safely swim and perform basic rescues in inland waterways. It is a practical safety education session that discusses the conditions, challenges and dangers of inland waterways and practices basic rescue skills.

Basis rescue skills include 

- Reach rescues

- Throw rescues

Course Delivery

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Face-to-Face face-to-face contact time of at least 1 Hour

Children over the age of 8 years and over are eligible to attend the program

This certificate does not require renewal

Can name dangers present at the river

•Wildlife – Crocodiles, snakes, venomous insects etc

•Water clarity and depth – To check the colour of the water to see if it is clean. We use branches and sticks to check the depth of the water and advise the children to never jump straight in but to check the depth first.

•Environment/Submerged objects – To look out for dangers like crumbling and slippery edges, barbed wire, fishing line with hooks and other debris that may be found in the water.

Have knowledge of the “WATERMAN WAY”

•When you go to the creek/river always go with someone “big” (Brother, Sister, Mum, Dad); Never go alone.

•If you get into trouble in the water, use the "WATERMAN WAY" turn over float on your back and yell out for help or use survival backstroke to get to safety.

•If a friend is in trouble, always try for a reach rescue first. If you can’t reach, try a throw rescue.

•Ring Emergency Services on "000"

Can safely demonstrate the different types of Rescues.

•Throw

Equipment required includes branches, sticks, kickboards, pool noodles, rope, personal floatation devices (PFDs) and loud voices.
